Today we were busy setting up our museum and we saw two shows.  The first was a sneak peak at BHS's production of "Mary Poppins."  It was nice to see some of our Francis Wyman alumni, and so talented! Two of our alumni that are playing lead roles were in 101! The show is playing at the high school this weekend and next.

Our second show was put on by the Science Center. They are teaching the kids about recycling. They took all the trash from yesterday's lunch and six students went through it and separated a large amount. Everyone saw how much food and drink is wasted. We will spend the rest of the week recycling after each lunch. This might be something we will do all the time in the future.

We look forward to seeing you tomorrow at our Kindergarten Museum.  The time is 8:30 - 9:15.  Your child will be able to walk around the classrooms and look at their art with you.

We are busy working on our art unit to exhibit on March 30th.  One piece that everyone has finished is a self portrait. Before we started we talked a lot about skin tones and how everybody's is a little different.  To help us understand how there can be so many shades, I read the books "The Colors of Us" and "All the Colors of the World."  The books were very discriptive by using words like butterscotch, sand, cinnamon, and peachy.  The class decided they would like to put their hands in a circle to see the different shades.

We have been talking about what an opinion is so each child will be able to compose an opinion piece. We've given them subjects to form an opinion about and they must also give us reasons why they feel that way. The whole class have been very creative with their reasoning.

Today we used Monet's and Van Gogh's paintings as an example. We asked the class to decide which painter's work they liked better.  The ones that chose Monet got in one group and the ones that chose van Gogh's got in another. They discussed the reasons why they liked each artist and had valid reasons.  I explained there was no right or wrong, that everyone was entitled to their own opinion.

You will find the reasons on the chart in the picture. Our next step will be to look at another subject, form an opinion, and write the reasons.

The Kindergarten Art Museum will be held on March 30, at 8:30.

Dr. Seuss Celebration

This week we celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday. Our day included many fun Seuss related activities. Each classroom had a guest reader that read one of their favorite Seuss tales.  Mr. Sheehan visited in the morning to do a reader's theater using "Green Eggs and Ham."  Each student had a part to read and was very excited to participate.

After lunch, Caroline's mom, Mrs. Schnee, came down from second grade to read "Yertle the Turtle." She surprised us by bringing a baby snapping turtle from the science center!  The class was overjoyed with the turtle's visit.  They enjoyed Mrs. Schnee's story as well!

Thanks to everyone that donated an item for our raffle basket. Don't forget the Carnival is Saturday, the 12th.  It is a really fun take for the kids.  The whole school benefits from the PTO's efforts.

Because of scheduling problems, we have had to change the date of our Kindergarten Museum.  It is tentatively set for Wednesday, March 30th. I will send more info ASAP.
